What should I do if I Observe Academic Dishonesy?

At some point, you may notice another student engaging in academic dishonesty. This can happen for several reasons, including:

  • professors and TAs might not see everything
  • your seat in a classroom gives you a different angle that allows you to see things that a proctor might not see
  • you are around your classmates more than your professors and TAs
  • and so you might know more about what is happening.

The Academic Honor Policy establishes minimum academic standards for the FSU community.  As a member of the FSU community you are expected to adhere to these standards and you will be held accountable if you violate them. You should expect other students to be held to these standards as well.  Violations of the Academic Honor Policy devalue the educational experience offered by our university, something that we all have a responsibility to safeguard. If you observe other students engaging in academic dishonesty, you can and should report your observations to your faculty.

If you have concerns about reporting academic dishonesty, please contact Dr. Adam Goldstein or Dr. Robin Leach, Associate Deans of Students, for advice and support (644-2428).

What do professors think? 56% of students surveyed disagreed with the idea that they should be held responsible for monitoring the integrity of fellow students, while 61% of participating faculty agreed that students should monitor the integrity of fellow students.1
